Advertisements for baby skin care products often remind of about a fact that we already know, it is simple common sense. Baby's new skin is extremely delicate. It needs special care to avoid irritation and allergic reactions. It needs very mild products to be used on it for these reasons.

Of course, you and I know these things, but it may come as a surprise to know that many of the products you see advertised for baby's skin are not mild, but often have ingredients in them that are really too harsh for an infants skin. Before you buy, you should know what to look for and what to avoid. You will have to look past the cuddly packaging and see the product for its true self in order to decide whether it should be used on your babys skin.

When you think of things that most commonly cause allergic reactions on your skin, you will realize that artificial fragrance and dyes are two of the top ingredients to blame. What are the first two things you notice about most baby care products? For me, I notice that fresh baby scent.

But, of course, this scent has to come from somewhere: artificial fragrance. How many people do you know that cannot be around perfume? Maybe they cannot even walk through the cosmetics area of department stores because they are so highly allergic to it.

If you talk to these people, you often find that they were not always allergic to this kind of fragrance; they developed it over the years. What are we doing when we start our children out in life, exposing them to high levels of man-made fragrances day after day? Will they eventually become as allergic to fragrance as some people are?

Dyes are the second thing mentioned above. Artificial dyes are in so many things that we eat, drink, etc. By exposing our babies to them from a very young age, we are only adding to the chances of them developing a reaction to them.

It has been proven that chemicals can be absorbed through the skin and it has been proven that artificial dyes often cause behavioral problems in young children. Are we accelerating this process with the constant exposure to dyes through baby skin care products? When I think about the things that I have used on my children, just because I loved that baby smell, I feel guilty.

I think of various rashes that occurred during my childrens infant stages and wonder if it was due to the baby products that I used on them.

Other ingredients that we should be aware of in regards to our infants skin include: citrus juices (often, in organic products, you will find essential oils from citrus fruits), menthol, and peppermint.

It is wise to look into essential oils and which ones are safe for babies (and pregnant mothers); not all of them are good to use on such tender skin. Keep in mind that your baby will be happier if their skin is not irritated in any way. Of course, happier babies generally help parents be more at peace, so helping your baby in this way helps you as well.

Another product that affects your baby that should be considered is laundry detergent. Most of the detergents created and marketed for cleansing clothes are created to give your clothes a fresh, clean, scent. What does this mean? Obviously it means that there is a heavy concentration of fragrance in the product.

This fragrance is transferred to the clothes during the wash and remains in them. By using these products, you are still putting man made fragrance on your baby's skin. Be picky, look for products that do not contain artificial dyes or fragrances to protect your baby from further irritation.

Remember, your baby's skin was protected from all of these good smelling, pretty, man-made chemicals for the entire time he was in your womb. His skin has no idea how to react to the various environmental factors that it will encounter as a natural part of life as we know it today. You can help his skin adjust to the world around him by using as many non-irritating ingredients as possible.

While drinking more water is a good idea for everyone, especially during hot summer months, too much water can be harmful to infants 6 months old and younger. According to a study in Clinicians Reviews a 1997 survey of new mothers found that nearly 25 percent give their babies water at least 3 times per week in the first month of life.

Water intoxication is rare in children and adults who are able to judge their own water needs by thirst and activity. But babies are not able to do this. Also, the kidneys of newborns filter more slowly than those of older infants, causing sodium levels in the blood to be diluted.

According to doctors, 24 cases of water intoxication were reported at the St. Louis Children's Hospital in the years 1989 to 1991. The problem seems to be increasing since only 10 cases were reported from 1985 to 1988. In the cases reported the otherwise healthy babies were 4 to 5 months old and drank three 8-oz. bottles of water within 6 to 12 hours.

Symptoms of water intoxication include pale urine, using more than 8 diapers a day, and baby sleeping more than usual and being difficult to wake up.

Mothers should be advised that healthy infants get all the water they need in breast milk or formula.

A baby can get water intoxication as a result of drinking several bottles of water a day or from drinking infant formula that has been diluted too much.

Water fills baby without adding calories, so water supplementation can result in weight loss or insufficient weight gain for the baby.

Pediatricians advise feeding babies 2 to 3 oz. more than their age in months at each feeding. For example, babies 4 months old would be fed 6 to 7 oz. three times a day. More than 8 oz. at any one feeding rarely necessary. The usual proportions of milk to water should be about two-thirds milk to one-third water. With these proportions, the baby receives about 8 oz of water equally spaced over a 24 hour period. If the formula is diluted, mild should not be less than 50 percent.

Only around seven months of age, when baby has started eating solid foods, should a little water be introduced in a cup.

Water intoxication can be prevented by following your physicians instructions.

Then you think, but what do we actually do? Just talk and hand over the gifts; or shall we play a few shower games?

Well, it does seem that many people do opt for playing a few baby shower games. If you are the playful type, and think some games will go down well at the shower, then why not have a bit of fun? There are no strict rules about baby shower games. In fact, you could take just about any party game and play it as it is. It is probably better, though, if you either come up with one or two unique ideas yourself, or give a baby twist to an ordinary party game. There must be thousands of variations you could come up with.

Here are just a few ideas that might stimulate more in you:

1. A team game that is popular across the world is a race to pass an apple from player to player, without using the hands, but using the chin to hold the apple. Baby shower game twist: try the same thing with a baby powder container. If it is the well rounded type they can be remarkably slippery, even when dry. Test it out first, to make sure it is possible (but not too easy) to pass under the chin.

2. There are lots of possible memory games. It will not be long before baby is into bed time stories and nursery rhymes. So, why not buy a good sized book with lots of the old nursery rhymes in. As the baby shower game, get the contestants to recite the nursery rhyme after you have read the first line. Some are very easy, but some will be frustrating as people try to remember word for word. If someone has a child who is into nursery rhymes, they will have a big advantage, so try to find a way to keep it even. Like make them do the reading instead of participating. When the baby shower game is over, you can donate the book to the mum-to-be.

3. An obvious baby shower game is guessing the date and time of the birth. Make it interesting by having a little bet on the outcome, with everyone agreeing on how much each to put in. record all the guesses, and when the big day comes, the nearest guess wins. Then, why not have a booby prize for the worst guess? Such as, having to do 10 diaper changes in the first month after the baby is born?

4. A variation on musical chairs could be good fun as a baby shower game, but for this you will need a few baby potties, so you'll need to elicit helps from friends with babies on this one. Set the chairs up for normal musical chairs, but then put a potty on top of each chair. Just watch people slide about as they make their dash for a potty spot when the music stops.

You could break this baby shower game into groups of say 6 if you manage to get 5 potties, or 5 for 4 etc. This may be best after a few champagnes, gins, beers or whatever you may be serving.

Baby nursery furniture and baby crib sets are a growing category, representing $1.1 billion at retail last year, and expected to grow to $1.4 billion by 2009. Today's baby furniture varies quite a bit in style, price and selection, and at over a billion dollars, there is room for a wide range of manufacturers in the nursery furniture field.

There are many top manufacturers in the nursery furniture category. The baby furniture category includes nursery furniture for children from birth through 2 years, including painted baby furniture, nursery crib furniture, bassinets, a baby table for changing diapers, glider rockers, rocking chairs, dressers, chests, armoires and bookcases. Basically anything you would purchase at a baby store while furniture shopping.

Although most of the parents claimed that they mostly shopped at discount stores they admittedly would make more extravagant purchases at a specialty baby store if there was something they really wanted. A Gen X mom talked about children strollers. She paid $300 for a stroller because she liked the features. So if a parent is willing to spend $300 on a stroller which is typically a smaller ticket item in comparison to nursery furniture what are they willing to spend on a nursery crib, an item that's use is far more than the use of a stroller.

Things like blankets, strollers, a nursery crib mattress, a toddler bed and accessories or items that would be bought for nursery gifts or baby gifts, or furniture for children over the age of 2 are not included in the category being discussed as leading infant bedroom furniture manufacturers. This is primarily nursery furniture for babies 2 and under in the strictest sense of the word.

According to Kids Today's exclusive Buying Trends Survey, 2.2% of U.S. households bought a nursery crib in 2004, and 2.7% bought other baby furniture. The median price point for a nursery crib in 2004 was $150, with those consumers planning to buy a nursery crib in 2005 saying they planned to spend a median of $200. Even still, 18% of consumers who bought a nursery crib in 2004 paid $500 or more.

What this tells me is that although 18% of parents purchasing a nursery crib probably planned to purchase practically but when push came to shove they were willing to spend on average and extra $300 above and beyond what they initially planned to spend. Why is this? Is it because we are seduced by all the new-fangled cribs such as the newer style of the round crib and the BRAND-NEW Corner cribs (shaped to fit in a corner)? It is common knowledge that the median prices of these specialty cribs cost much more than the traditional rectangle cribs. As far as infant furniture goes round baby cribs are a fairly new concept. I do not even remember them being available when I had my first child. Since a separate room for a baby nursery is not always an option some parents feel that the round baby cribs and corner cribs which is a new concept is the way to go, they are both big space savers.

It could also be because parents are willing to purchase the top of the line 3-in-1 cribs in hopes that they will save money in the long run? Or quite possibly is it because parents will spend just about anything on their children, trying to provide everything they were never given?

Obviously a nursery crib is the most important purchase you will make for your child...along with the rest of the nursery furniture. Nursery Furniture Manufacturers know this and cater our need to give our child "everything". That is why nursery furniture and nursery crib sets are such a booming market!

When it comes to choosing a baby shower gift, it's very easy to get tempted by all those cute little outfits that are often completely impractical. If you want to give the expectant mother (or yourself!) a very useful and practical gift, why not buy a changing table. These are fabulous pieces of furniture that are wonderful for a new mum's back and help preserve your own mattress from destruction.

I was given a changing table prior to the birth of my first child, and just took it for granted. It wasn't until I went on holidays for a few days and was without it, that I realised just how wonderful it really was. My husband had suggested we hire one or perhaps even buy a collapsible one to take on holidays with us, but I foolishly said that it was only for four days and I would just use the bed where we were staying.

It didn't even take a day before I was thoroughly regretting that decision. I hadn't realised just how often I used the changing table, and I hadn't thought about just how uncomfortable it would be to go without it. The first thing I noticed was that I missed the convenient height of the changing table. Mine was perfect, I could change baby's diaper without having to bend over at all, unless I wanted to give baby a kiss or cuddle.

By the time I'd changed two diapers using a mat on the floor, my back was already starting to tell me just how much it missed the convenient height of the changing table. I shifted to the bed, which helped my back a little (and my knees!) but I still had to bend over and my back kept complaining. By the fifth change I was having trouble straightening up again - a problem I'd never had using my changing table.

The other thing I hadn't really thought about was how handy the changing table is as a storage unit. All my frequently used items were right on hand, and anything else that might be needed was neatly tucked in the cupboards underneath. Mind also contains some drawers with all the basic baby clothing in it, so I don't have to move away from the changing table at all while changing a diaper. It's amazing how quickly all those containers get mixed up and lost in your diaper bag.

Finally I gave up and handed baby changing duties over to my husband, while my back straightened itself out again. Once I was fine we alternated doing the changes. I was extremely glad to get home again! Every day from then on I thanked my lucky stars that someone was kind enough to give me a changing table when I was expecting. Nowadays it's gone through two babies and is used simply for clothes storage, which shows that if you think ahead when you choose a changing table, it can be an important piece of furniture in your house for many years to come.

It sounds stupid, I know but I never even changed a diaper until after I had my baby. I knew nothing about diapers, babies or anything else. I was totally lost, thank goodness for the help of my mom and the nurses at the hospital. So here are the basics for such a simple task, changing diapers. Welcome to Diaper Changing 101.

First of all, you are going to need a diaper, a place to change the baby, baby wipes, diaper rash ointment, paper towels for drying off babies bottom, you only need this if baby has diaper rash, For older babies you are going to need something for baby to play with.

Now that you have your supplies lets get started. If you are using disposable diapers then this is how you change a disposable diaper. There are also cloth diapers which our parents and parents parents used. Not really the best thing for your babies behind. There is no absorption so baby is more likely to get diaper rash.

First you are going to have to get all the supplies you need to change a diaper, because you should never be more than an arms length away from your baby, at any time, if your baby is on a changing table. If you have a changing table then all of your supplies are usually right there anyways. If changing baby on the floor this doesn't apply.

Secondly you will have to get your baby and place baby on the changing table, if changing table has a security seat belt then buckle that. Cheek to see if baby has soiled her clothes if she did remove all her clothes and cover the top part of her with a blanket so she doesn't get cold.

Remove the dirty diaper, if it's a poopy diaper make sure to have a baby wipe ready and immediately place on your child's bottom. Proceed to clean up all the poopy. There are baby wipe warmers so you don't place an ice cold baby wipe on your babies bottom, This would most likey not be pleasent for your baby. If your changing a boy, BEWARE OF THE SPRAY. it seems like when you change a boy's diaper the second you take the diaper off boy's pee. So before removing the boys diaper cheek to see if it looks like your little boy is going to pee on you. If it looks like they are then wait a second or two and cover baby back up with the dirty diaper until your baby is done.

If your baby has diaper rash avoid baby wipes. Use a warm paper towel or washcloth and gently clean the area. After the area is clean, dry off with a dry paper towel and let your babies bottom be exposed to air for a couple minutes before putting diaper rash ointment on.

After baby is clean then is is time to put the diaper back on, unfold the diaper and slide under your babies bottom, Velcro tabs go on the bottom, Lift up babies legs and proceed to put on diaper rash ointment, don't be afraid to put on a lot of diaper rash ointment. You don't want to put on half the tube but don't be shy. Then fold the top up over babies tummy and proceed to tuck the sides in and Velcro each side, making sure the diaper is not to tight around babies tummy. If baby is new and still has the umbilical cord then fold the diaper down so you don't irritate it.

Proceed to put back on your babies clothes, and CONGRATULATIONS! you have succeeded in changing a diaper. You have passed Diaper Changing 101 with flying colors.
